Graduate Careers In The Music Industry, with Amelia Etherington

Looking for a career in the music industry?  July 23 graduate Amelia was passionate about working in this sector, so we were thrilled when she told us about the job she’d successfully secured…

What is your current job role title and company name and where are you working in terms of location?

I am a Club & Events Assistant at The Ministry/Ministry Of Sound, and work in Elephant & Castle in South London.

Describe a typical day in your position for us…

On Monday to Wednesday mornings I am based at the club itself. The rest of the week I am at The Ministry, which is a fantastic co-working space.

At the club I help with invoicing and organising club DJ’s. I am also working on a project to help find sub promoters for club nights. I also speak to agents and help find new talent!

At the co-working space, my role is different. I’ll first run through the events of that week with my boss to understand what’s needed, and I’ll then help set up the events, organise food & drinks, meet & greet people, and help host the event.

The events are really varied and can range from tech app launches to cocktail making and spa days for all the members of the Ministry.

Every Thursday and Friday we also have an evening event with a DJ and live music!

What do you love most about your role?

I love that it’s a mix of two part-time roles, which keeps my week really varied. It’s also a fun and young place to work! I have always wanted to work in the music industry and haven’t been disappointed.

Seeing everything from behind the scenes is amazing, from the tech and the maintenance to understanding how the bookers and promoters work.

What skills learnt at OMBS have you found most beneficial to you in your position?

The IT skills were valuable beyond belief, and the speed typing has been hugely beneficial in helping me to get my work done fast.

The event management module was obviously very helpful, as being aware of every single detail needed to organise a professional event has been a critical part of my role. Even just understanding the abbreviations for event management terminology has meant I’ve understood what my more experienced colleagues are discussing in meetings, for example.

How did studying with OMBS help you feel confident about your early career and getting your first role?

I feel the confidence I developed whilst at OMBS has really helped me settle into the workplace. My role is very fast-paced, so because of the intensity of the course at OMBS, I felt very prepared and did not find entering employment much of a shock in terms of the hours and workload.

As part of the interview process to get the job I did a research task, which was just like one of the OMBS assignments, and I got the role based on my completion of it!

OMBS fully prepared me for how to show initiative in professional tasks, which has meant I’m now in my desired role and sector.
