Career Spotlight: Annie’s Journey from OMBS to SMEG UK

Annie Green - Oxford Media & Business School

At our Oxford-based business school, we’re proud to see our graduates thriving in their careers. We often invite our alumni to come back and visit us, as we love to hear their career news. This week, we catch up with one of our alumni, Annie, to discover how she’s applying her skills and experience in her role as a Team Leader for SMEG UK.

What is your current job role title, company name and sector, and where are you working in terms of location?

My Job title is Team Leader, Trade, at SMEG UK. They are a well-known home appliance manufacturer, and I work at their UK Head Office in Oxfordshire.

What are the highlights of your career to date?

The highlight of my career so far is being employed by a global company, and being given the opportunity by them to grow professionally through their support for my skill development.

I have now trained up several members of my team, and being able to watch them gain confidence and grow over the past few years is definitely a big highlight for me.

What do you love most about your current role or industry sector?

I get to work with so many great people for a great company that really values employees!

What skills learned at OMBS have you found most beneficial to you in your position?

The Microsoft skills I gained at OMBS put me in a great position for entry into the workplace, plus the Personal Development Module really helped me understand my personality strengths and weaknesses, which was incredibly helpful when I was looking for the right career.

How did studying with OMBS help you feel confident about your early career and getting your first role?

The skillset I gained and the contacts I made while studying at OMBS helped me to get my first employment role, which isn’t always easy, as it’s so competitive! Having the support and advice from the tutor team also helped me to apply for the right role(s) for me.  I also gained confidence through knowing that if I ever needed advice or support, the teachers were only an email away. The support doesn’t stop when you graduate from OMBS!

What advice would you give a current OMBS student?

Make sure you commit to your studies! It was the best thing I ever did in terms of my career, and really helped me to understand what I wanted to do after I left. It can open doors and help you meet some great employment contacts.

Also, enjoy the time you are there, as it goes by so fast! Take in as much as you can. If I could do it all over again, I would! Oxford is such a fantastic city. Once an OMBS student, always an OMBS student….as they say.
